aps black steel forging

APS Black Steel brake discs are at the forefront of cutting-edge engineering, crafted through advanced CNC machining techniques from single-piece forging. During the forging process, the metal undergoes a transformation that generates a directional grain flow perfectly aligned with the contours of the disc. This innovative feature contributes to the exceptional strength of the disc, significantly minimizing the risk of cracking and other catastrophic failures commonly found in welded designs of inferior quality.

One of the critical advantages of APS Black Steel brake discs lies in the proprietary heat treatment they undergo. This heat treatment serves a dual purpose, enhancing the strength of the steel while imparting unique properties to the disc. This process bonds carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen in the top layer of the metal, effectively strengthening the structure. It is important to note that this is not a superficial coating that can wear off over time but a transformative treatment that alters the very nature of the steel itself.

Furthermore, the heat treatment is responsible for the striking black appearance of the discs. Beyond aesthetics, this black surface serves a practical purpose by endowing the discs with high resistance to corrosion and oxidation. As aircraft braking systems endure extreme thermal cycling, the surface of the discs is exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Thanks to the heat treatment, APS Black Steel discs exhibit remarkable resilience against the corrosive effects of these conditions, ensuring optimal performance and longevity in the most demanding braking applications.

In summary, APS Black Steel brake discs are a testament to precision engineering and advanced metallurgical techniques. The one-piece forging and directional grain flow provide superior strength and durability, surpassing the limitations of welded designs. The proprietary heat treatment further enhances the discs, strengthening the steel and imbuing it with a black, corrosion-resistant surface. These state-of-the-art brake discs deliver exceptional performance and reliability, making them the ideal choice for aircraft braking systems where safety and efficiency are paramount.

APS Black Steel – Break-in Procedures

Conditioning Procedure for APS Linings

Metallic Linings

NOTE: APS linings are an iron-based, metallic compound. These linings must be conditioned correctly to provide optimum performance and service life.

  1. Taxi Aircraft at a high rate of speed (30-35 kts.).
  2. Apply brakes with a slightly heavier than normal pressure.
  3. Repeat the above operation for a second consecutive time. Do not let the brakes cool between stops.
  4. Allow brakes to cool for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Apply brakes to confirm that normal pressure will hold the aircraft at high-level static run-up power settings. If the brakes hold, the conditioning procedure is complete. If brakes do not hold, allow brakes to cool completely and repeat steps 1-3.

Non-Metallic Linings *

  1. Taxi aircraft for 1500 feet with the engine at 1700 rpm applying brake pedal forces needed to develop a 5- 10 mph taxi speed.
  2. Allow brakes to cool for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Apply brakes to confirm that normal pressure will hold the aircraft at high-level static run-up power settings. If the brakes hold, the conditioning procedure is complete. If brakes do not hold, allow brakes to cool completely and repeat steps 1-3.

Non-metallic linings are suitable for all types of steel or chrome-plated brake discs.
