Batteries
Considerations When Choosing a battery for your Grumman or other aircraft.

Available battery choices for Grumman Certified Aircraft
Flooded cell, sealed flooded, and AGM batteries are all commonly used in general aviation aircraft. Each type has its own unique characteristics and advantages, as well as some disadvantages.
Flooded cell batteries are the oldest type of lead-acid battery and are the most commonly used in general aviation aircraft. They are also known as wet cell batteries. Flooded cell batteries have removable caps that allow the user to add distilled water to the cells as needed to maintain the proper level of electrolyte. The main advantage of flooded cell batteries is that they are relatively inexpensive and have a long service life. However, they do require regular maintenance, such as adding water to the cells, and can be damaged if overcharged or over-discharged.
Sealed flooded batteries are similar to flooded cell batteries, but they are sealed and do not require the user to add water to the cells. Instead, they use recombinant technology, which allows the battery to recombine the oxygen and hydrogen that are produced during charging, thus eliminating the need for maintenance. Sealed flooded batteries are more expensive than flooded cell batteries, but they are also more convenient to use, as they do not require regular maintenance. They also tend to be more resistant to damage from overcharging or over-discharging than flooded cell batteries.
AGM batteries (Absorbed Glass Mat) are a newer type of lead-acid battery that have become increasingly popular in general aviation aircraft. AGM batteries use a glass mat to absorb the electrolyte, which allows them to be sealed and maintenance-free. They also tend to be more resistant to damage from overcharging or over-discharging than flooded cell batteries. However, they are also more expensive than flooded cell batteries.
In terms of performance, AGM batteries offer higher energy density and more consistent performance than flooded cell batteries. They are also more resistant to vibration, which is important for aircraft applications. Additionally, AGM batteries have a lower internal resistance and self-discharge rate than flooded cell batteries. AGM batteries are also more efficient, they will charge and discharge faster than flooded cell batteries.
In summary, flooded cell batteries are the most economical and have the longest service life, but they require regular maintenance. Sealed flooded batteries are more convenient to use, but they are also more expensive. AGM batteries are the most expensive, but they also offer the best performance and are the most convenient to use, as they do not require maintenance. Ultimately, the choice of battery type will depend on the specific needs and budget of the aircraft owner.
